Barrier-island salt is the real enemy of Folly glass

Most towns around Charleston get some coastal salt, but Folly Beach gets the direct hit. Sitting out on the barrier island, oceanfront homes on East Ashley Avenue and West Ashley Avenue take continuous salt aerosol off the Atlantic. That salt lands on the glass and dries into a mineral haze that scatters light and greys out your view of the water, which is the whole reason those windows are there. It shows up as a dull film long before the glass looks dirty, and no amount of tap water and paper towels fixes it, because tap water leaves its own calcium and iron behind.

How we get Folly windows spot-free on the outside

For exterior glass we use a water-fed pole fed by a reverse-osmosis and deionization system. That process strips about 99.9 percent of the dissolved minerals out of the water, so it dries spot-free with nothing left on the pane. It is the opposite of a garden hose: instead of adding minerals, it rinses the Atlantic salt off and leaves clean glass. The pole reaches roughly 40 feet, so most second-story windows on Folly's taller oceanfront and near-beach homes get cleaned from the ground, with no ladders resting against your salt-worn siding.

Inside glass, screens, tracks, and sills

Interior windows are cleaned the traditional way, by hand, with squeegee and solution. We lay drop cloths on your sills and floors and detail every pane edge so there are no missed corners. Screens come out on every visit to be wet-brushed and rinsed separately, at no extra charge, which matters on Folly because screens trap salt and sand that would otherwise wash right back onto the glass. Tracks get vacuumed and wiped, and sills are cleaned inside and out. Any interior-accessible skylight glass gets wiped on the same visit. Never pressure wash your own windows on Folly

It is tempting to blast the salt off with a pressure washer, especially after a storm. Do not do it to your windows. Pressure can force water past the gasket on an insulated glass unit and cause the permanent hazy fog you see trapped between the panes. On the coast, hurricane-tape residue and years of salt make DIY even riskier. We clean glass with purified water and hand tools only, never pressure, and if you ever see a streak after we leave, we come back and fix it. That spot-free guarantee is the whole point.
