The salt haze problem on a barrier island

Seabrook Island's whole appeal, being surrounded by ocean and marsh, is also what makes its windows the hardest in the Lowcountry to keep clear. Salt aerosol off Seabrook Beach lands on the glass every day, and because barrier-island homes sit within a few miles of open water, the buildup is worse here than in inland neighborhoods. Salt is mineral, and minerals do not evaporate. When you wipe oceanfront glass with tap water, you add calcium and magnesium on top of the salt already there and the panes dry cloudier than before. Purified water is the only thing that removes the film without leaving its own behind.

How we clean your exterior glass

For the outside of your windows we use a water-fed pole fed by a reverse-osmosis and deionization system. That process strips about 99.9 percent of the dissolved minerals out of the water before it ever touches your glass. Salt, pollen, and grime lift off, the purified water rinses everything away, and the panes dry spot-free with no squeegee marks and no towel needed. The pole reaches roughly 40 feet, so most of the second-story glass on Seabrook's raised beach homes gets done from the ground. No ladders scraping your cedar shake, no boots on the roof.

Interiors detailed by hand

Inside, purified water is not the tool. We hand-clean interior glass the traditional way with squeegee and solution, lay drop cloths on your sills and floors, and detail every pane edge by hand so there is no film left in the corners. Screens come out on every visit, get wet-brushed and rinsed separately, and go back clean at no extra charge. We vacuum and wipe the tracks and wipe the sills inside and out. Any skylight glass you can reach from inside gets wiped on the same visit. Cleaning the exterior of rooftop skylights is a separate service we can quote.

Do not pressure wash your own windows

On an island where irrigation and salt are constant, it is tempting to blast the lower windows with a pressure washer. Do not. High pressure can drive water past the gaskets on an insulated glass unit and cause the hazy, permanent fog you see trapped between the panes when a seal fails. We never put pressure on glass. Salt etching and irrigation hard-water spots on first-floor windows get a controlled restoration instead, and the whole job is backed by our spot-free guarantee: if you see a streak after we leave, we come back and fix it.
